Hope for Kenyan Orphans and Community from the Heart(s) of Cornwall
To Donate - http://www.justgiving.com/aid4orphans Last summer HITH Volunteers Fenna and Sophie worked at Kernow House, the hub of Aid 4 Orphans (see below) and then home to 23 children (now nearer 30) and staff. They returned changed; inspired by the hope, appreciation and generosity they encountered among the people they met, and the big hearts and spirits of those who have so little. The Birth of Aid 4 OrphansDuring a holiday in Kenya in 2007, Peter and Vanessa Bragg and their family visited the Likoni orphanage on the outskirts of Mombasa. On return to Cornwall, they set up and registered the charity Aid 4 Orphans, which has developed to support an increasing number of children with previously desperate lives as well as the wider community of Likoni, a slum area where sickness and destitution are rife. (visit http://www.aid4orphans.com) Read Fenna's and Sophie's story here Hope in the Heart is privileged to be working in partnership with Aid 4 Orphans to support the Likoni community by raising awareness of the lives of its inhabitants. If you would like a free one-hour or 90-minute presentation by Tam, Fenna and Sophie, please contact us.
Peter, Vanessa and their team have worked tirelessly to expand Aid 4 Orphans, and they now provide support beyond the orphanage, to others in the Likoni community.

Beatrice Lipuka's son Vincent was the first child outside of the orphanage to be sponsored to go to school as a result of Peter and Vanessa's efforts. Peter and Vanessa explain: "Beatrice is the mother of seven children and an HIV widow. Vincent’s father died when he was 12, and as the eldest son Felix was in prison, Vincent had become the man of the house. Beatrice was struggling to provide for her children and told us that she was doing all she could do, which was to pray hard."
Vincent is now in a very good boarding school near Nairobi. Three other children are being sponsored. Her eldest daughters are seeking employment and Beatrice tells us they are very happy to be at school.
Beatrice's tenacity, compassion and determination now ensure that many other girls and women do not have to experience the heartbreak and poverty she endured as an HIV widow left to bring up a young family, or of becoming AIDS victims themselves.
Peter and Vanessa are currently raising funds to (among other things) build new dormitories at Kernow House to help more children living rough on the streets or in abusive situations to find safety, security and hope. They are also working with local groups to strengthen the community and families so that fewer children will be abandoned or orphaned.
